Whiskybase is a community-built platform. Every bottle, photo, brand, and distillery entry exists because members take the time to add and update information. By contributing, you help grow the world’s largest whisky database and support other whisky explorers on their journey.
This guide explains how you can contribute, what tools are available, and what happens after you submit information.

1. What you need to start contributing
To add or edit information on Whiskybase, you only need:
A free Whiskybase user account
Access to the bottle, or a clear photo of it
A willingness to follow the contribution guidelines so entries remain accurate and trustworthy
If you do not have an account yet, you can create one for free.
2. Ways you can contribute
There are several ways members can help build the database.
2.1 Add new bottles
New bottles can be added through the Submit a bottle form.
This is the only way new bottles enter the database.
To ensure accuracy:
Only submit bottles you own
Or bottles for which you have clear photographic proof
Whisky moves in a fast and dynamic market, so reliable information is essential.
2.2 Update existing bottle information
Each whisky page has an Add / update info link on the left side.
This allows you to correct or improve existing data, such as:
Dates
Cask information
Distillery details
Bottler information
Barcode corrections
Packaging notes
You can update your own submissions at any time, and you can also help improve information added by others.
2.3 Add photos
Below each bottle image or placeholder, you will find a Send a photo link.
Photos help verify bottles and improve the visual consistency of the database.
You may submit:
A clear full-bottle photo
A readable label photo
A bottle-with-packaging photo when relevant
More details are available in the Photo Guidelines article.
3. Understanding the tools
Here is a simple overview of the contribution tools:
| TOOL | PURPOSE | NOTES |
|---|---|---|
| Submit a bottle | Add a brand new whisky to the database | Requires ownership or photo proof |
| Add / update info | Edit or improve information on an existing bottle | Use only verifiable information |
| Send a photo | Add new images to improve bottle pages | Must meet photo quality standards |

4. What happens after you submit
When you submit a new bottle or photo, it enters a review queue.
A Whiskybase moderator or specialist will:
Check that the bottle exists
Verify the information matches the label
Ensure the data follows the naming and formatting guidelines
Review photos for clarity and quality
This review process is essential for keeping the database clean and dependable.
Please note: Because members contribute from around the world, and thousands of bottles flow into the market every year, review times may vary. The team works hard to keep the waiting time as low as possible.5. Membership points and status
Every contribution earns points. These points help determine your membership status on Whiskybase, such as Newbie, Junior Member, Senior Member, or even Connoisseur.
You can learn more about how points work and when your status changes in the article:
